GO AHEAD: PICK A FIGHT

For a while now, I’ve been regularly reading this blog: www.fatcyclist.com. It’s written by a guy who goes by the name of Fatty. Mostly he writes about cycling—bikes, races, etc. He also writes about his family and a bit about cancer—his wife, Susan, is fighting metastatic breast cancer. It’s been good reading for me lately. Aside from my recent interest in cycling, there’s something cathartic about reading his always-hopeful posts about the struggles he and his family face.

For those of you who don’t know, my mom’s been fighting a rare type of uterine cancer for the last five years. It sucks. Seriously. And there’s not much I can do about it. But I can do this. I can go to San Jose and run a few miles. I’ve joined this team and this event because I know what cancer does. I’ve joined because my mom’s not the only one. I’ve joined because I need to do something. I can help Fatty meet his fundraising goals. I can raise a little money for the fight. I can run in honor of my mom (Ellen), my mother-in-law (Patty), Uncle Bill, Agnes, Mary, Sarah, baby Serenity, and everyone else I've known who has been affected by cancer. I can do this much.

Recently Fatty asked his friends and loyal readers to help him raise some money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation by entering in the LiveStrong Challenge (LAF’s signature fundraising event) and joining Team Fat Cyclist: Fighting for Susan—Team Fatty, for short—in each of the four cities the event is being held in. His goal is to build the largest LiveStrong Challenge Team there has ever been and to raise more money to fight cancer than any team ever has. So my husband, Phillip, and I have joined Team Fatty for the LiveStrong Challenge San Jose 5k run.

Please consider supporting me in this challenge. Even if I don't reach my goal, every little bit helps.
